offset to one side of the entrance in order to leave room at one end for

the management operations mentioned. This means that the brood will

mostly be found near to the entrance, while the honey will be stored

towards the end of the hive. The exact arrangement of followers is at the

discretion of the beekeeper, who will, of course, take direction from the

bees.

The side entrance holes also, I believe, improve the bees' capacity to

ventilate their hive, due to the gaps between several combs being

accessible to both bees and air. Pollen- and nectar-laden bees can also

gain easy access for the same reason.

A single comb lifted from a top bar hive. With care, comb can be inspected as easily as in a

framed hive.

I have no doubt that end-entrance TBHs work as well, and my

innovations are an attempt to improve on them and make the TBH more

versatile and suitable for a wider range of climatic conditions. Only time

will tell if I am on the right path.

The fact that, once the hive is in place, there is no heavy lifting to be
